By Peesh Chopra - From Studio to Stage: The Making of “Midnight Reverie”
I’m Peesh Chopra—Los Angeles–based composer, producer, and performer—and I couldn’t be more excited to share the story behind my latest EP, Midnight Reverie. This collection of four instrumental tracks has been months in the making, and I want to pull back the curtain on my creative process, the inspirations that fueled each composition, and what you can expect next as I take these tracks from the studio to the stage.
1. Origins: Finding Inspiration in the Night
I’ve always been drawn to the energy of L.A. after dusk. There’s a certain electric hum in the air—neon lights reflecting off wet pavement, the distant echo of street musicians on Sunset Boulevard, and moments of quiet introspection on the rooftop of my Echo Park studio. Midnight Reverie started as a series of late-night jam sessions, where I let the city’s nocturnal rhythm guide my fingers across the keys and fretboard.
Each track, in its own way, captures a facet of those moments:
“Neon Pulse” channels the relentless drive of the city’s nightlife, built around a pulsing synth bass and syncopated drum patterns.
“Moonlit Waltz” layers classical piano motifs over an ambient electronic backdrop—my tribute to stolen moments of calm beneath the moon.
2. The Compositional Process
I approached this EP as both storyteller and sound sculptor. Here’s a quick peek at my workflow:
Melodic Seed: I start with a simple motif—often just four or five notes that catch my ear. For “Neon Pulse,” that motif came from noodling on a vintage Roland Juno-106 at 2 a.m.
Rhythmic Foundation: Next, I build a beat around that motif. I tend to gravitate toward hybrid rhythms that blend electronic drums with live percussion—think drum machine precision meeting human groove.
Textural Layers: Once the beat clicks, I add pads, arpeggiators, and ambient field recordings. I recorded footsteps in an empty parking garage and layered them subtly into “Understreet Echoes,” the EP’s third track.
Mix and Refine: Mixing is where the magic happens—balancing frequencies, carving out space for each instrument, and applying analog tape saturation for warmth.
This process isn’t linear; I’ll often bounce between stages, tweaking a melody after laying down the mix or re-recording percussion when I hear something new.
3. Collaborations That Sparked Creativity
While Midnight Reverie is deeply personal, I couldn’t have done it alone. A few shout-outs:
Ava Liu, who laid down soaring violin lines on “Moonlit Waltz,” turning a simple sketch into an orchestral dreamscape.
DJ Kairo, whose drum programming on “Neon Pulse” added that extra swagger—I’d send him a beat, and he’d flip it in ways I never imagined.
Morgan Reyes, my mixing engineer, whose patient ear helped me shape the final sonic identity of the EP.
Collaborating with these talented friends pushed me out of my comfort zone and opened up new creative doors.
4. From Studio to Stage: Upcoming Live Shows
Recording in a studio is one thing; bringing these tracks to life onstage is a whole other adventure. I’m thrilled to announce a run of November residency dates at The Echo Lounge in Silver Lake, where I’ll be debuting Midnight Reverie live with a five-piece band. Expect immersive visuals, live improvisation, and a chance to hear every glitch, hum, and heartbeat of the EP in real time.

5. What’s Next?
After the Silver Lake residency, I’ll be taking the show on the road: planning stops in San Francisco, Seattle, and New York early next year. And I’m already sketching ideas for a follow-up project—leaning into more vocal collaborations and sampling sounds recorded on tour.
But for now, I hope Midnight Reverie gives you a window into those late-night inspirations that drive me. If you’ve listened to the EP, let me know which track resonates most with your own midnight memories.
